These devoted alumni acknowledge the legacy of Jerome S. Coles, M.D.,
who graduated in 1936, from the School of Medicine, and in 1932, from
the College of Arts and Science. A truly unusual physician scientist
and scientific physician, he devoted his remarkable talents to his
profession and his alma mater. Dr. Coles was a distinguished practicing
surgeon and taught medical students, interns and residents at the
Bellevue Hospital Center. After retiring from surgical practice, he
joined the Philip A. Hunt Chemical Corporation, ultimately becoming
its chief executive officer. Following these years in medicine and
business, Dr. Coles began his "third career," as chairman of the NYU
Medical Center Board, from 1977 to 1984. A most effective and imaginative
leader, he formulated and provided the School with programs of excellence
in research, education and patient care. The following alumni, faculty
and friends have contributed $2,500 or more to the Alumni Campaign
from September 1, 2003 to August 31, 2004.
