NYU Hospitals Center is a major cardiac and thoracic referral center where approximately 1300 major cardiac surgical procedures (including about 150 pediatric cardiac procedures) and 300 thoracic procedures are performed each year. The formal teaching program includes directed reading and topical reviews, formal case discussions, staff meetings, case presentations, extensive experience with echocardiography, and lectures by staff and visiting professors. Research is an active and extensive part of the division's efforts and is centered around large multi-center outcomes trials, with special emphasis on neurologic outcome and methods of neuro protection. The staff is comprised of 8 full time board-certified anesthesiologists and one full-time research Registered Nurse.
Clinical Case Mix
Caseload at NYU is varied, and on the cutting edge of technological development in the field of cardiac surgery. All types of procedures are performed here except for cardiac transplantation. NYU serves as a tertiary care center, where the most critically ill patients are referred often after being rejected by other hospitals. NYU is also a referral center for pediatric cardiac surgery, minimally invasive valve surgery, off pump coronary bypass surgery, and all types of cardiac surgery reoperations. Very few of the cases can be considered "routine". NYU performs a large number of demanding minimally invasive heartport and valve procedures. The anesthesiologist's role in these cases is extensive, and we have been actively involved in educating anesthesiologists at other hospitals in the management of these cases.
Transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE) are performed on almost every patient, including pediatric patients. The staff of the CV anesthesia service is internationally known in their efforts to use TEE to assess risks, guide therapy, and educate other CV anesthesiologist throughout the world.
Thoracic anesthesia is also an integral part of our practice. We utilize optimal techniques of anesthesia for thoracic surgery, including thoracic epidural analgesia, fiberoptic intubation and lung isolation techniques. In addition we also provide anesthesia for the pulmonary transplant surgeries.
Approximately 50% of the orthotopic liver transplants, are done by the cardiac anesthesia service. The living-related liver transplant patients are, under the sole care of the cardiac anesthesia service.
