New York, June 13, 2005 – The Center for the Study of Asian
American Health at the New York University School of Medicine presents
The Asian American Health Seminar Series: The Validity of Race-Based
Medicine. The discussion will explore the question “Is there
meaningful biological evidence for race and is this evidence relevant
to medicine?” The talk does not attempt to provide answers
but rather it will aim to articulate this controversial issue and
examine a constructive biological, cultural, and epidemiological
framework for the discussion.
The speaker at the event will be Mekbib Gemeda, Director of the
Office of Diversity Affairs at New York University School of Medicine.
He has taught culture and communication and has been involved for
over a decade in the national effort to increase diversity in biomedicine
by developing programs for the professional development of underrepresented
minorities in biomedicine.
