Dr. Robert Cancro to be Honored by the Irene & Eric Simon Brain Research Foundation
Dr. Robert Cancro, who was Chairman of Psychiatry at NYU for 29 years and former Director of the Nathan Kline Institute, will be honored for his contributions to brain research and the field of mental health. His achievements as clinician, educator, and researcher, will be celebrated at the Irene & Eric Simon (IES) Brain Research Foundation Gala Dinner Fund-raiser on October 6th. Proceeds will be directed towards the Foundation’s efforts to establish a Summer Fellowship Program for young scientists and a speakers’ bureau, among other goals.
Currently a Lucius N. Littauer Professor of Psychiatry at NYU and longest-serving chairman of any academic psychiatry department in the nation, Dr. Cancro has pushed for progress in policy and research. In addition to serving as Director in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center, he was also President of the National Council on Alcoholism (New York City Affiliate) and Chairman of the Medical Board at NYU Medical Center. Dr. Cancro’s expertise was sought out by federal agencies such as the United States Secret Service and Department of Justice, where he served as consultant. His achievements were highlighted by numerous awards, which include the New York State Office of Mental Health Award and Progress in Psychiatry Award. Dr. Cancro is also the author of over 87 research publications.
The IES Foundation Gala will be held from 6PM to 10PM on Thursday, October 6th at the Tides Estate on Belmont Ave., North Haledon, New Jersey. The goal of the Irene & Eric Simon Brain Research Foundation is to help advance research and education in the area of brain research, with a focus on addiction and pain and other diseases and conditions of the brain, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, schizophrenia, and aging. The Foundation will encourage outstanding young scientists to enter this important field of research as well as focus public attention on the importance of basic research.
