The facilities of the NYU Cardiac & Vascular Institute span the entire NYU Medical Center campus, including the Hospitals Center and the School of Medicine.
The Institute is dedicated to enhancing physical space further, and creating state-of-the-art facilities through renovations and new construction.
The Jean & David Blechman Cardiac & Vascular
Center
A new home for New York's most advanced Cardiac & Vascular Care
The newly opened Jean and David Blechman Cardiac & Vascular Center serves as
a central gateway to the many sophisticated diagnostic, treatment and support services
offered by the NYU Cardiac & Vascular Institute. For far too long, care for
patients with vascular or heart disease has been compartmentalized and fragmented.
The NYU Cardiac and Vascular Institute is a service in which top quality patient
care, cutting-edge research and world-renowned training programs all come together.
The Blechman Cardiac & Vascular Center combines all cardiac and vascular medical
specialists into a single continuum where all elements of the cardiac and vascular
disease processes are addressed in a safe, personalized and comprehensive manner.
Patients at the Center are greeted by a friendly reception area from which all
scheduling and admitting processes will take place. They proceed to an initial
evaluation by a physician in one of our modern, comfortable examination rooms.
Noninvasive diagnostic and treatment services are offered, while patients who
require invasive or more extensive procedures will be directed to those services
elsewhere at NYU Medical Center. The Blechman Cardiac & Vascular Center houses a patient
and family education and resource center where families can have all their questions
answered by knowledgeable staff.
At the Blechman Cardiac & Vascular Center, our goals are to provide every patient with personalized care, and access to the most advanced and comprehensive medical technologies and procedures available.

Cardiac and Vascular Research Center

NYU has begun the construction of a new 13-story research building – the Joan
and Joel Smilow Research Building. Two floors of state-of-the-art space will be
dedicated to further enhancing NYU's programs in cardiovascular research. Recognizing
the potential to make extraordinary advances in the prevention, diagnosis, and
treatment of cardiovascular disease, the Cardiac and Vascular Research Center will
provide a coordinated approach to the work and funding of physician-scientists
conducting cutting-edge research.

Cardiac and Vascular Interventional Laboratories
As innovators in the field, the Interventional Laboratories at NYU Medical Center continue to provide the latest interventional cardiac and vascular procedures, and are frequently involved in major national clinical trials. Changes that are currently being implemented include the addition of a new area for patients awaiting or recovering from procedures, and extensive renovations to the laboratories – including all new state-of-the-art equipment.

Noninvasive Cardiology Laboratory
The Noninvasive Cardiology Laboratory at NYU Medical Center is one of the busiest in the country. The lab performs more echocardiograms than any other center on the East Coast. Patients come to the lab from all over the world, and doctors send tapes and digital echocardiography files to our physicians for their expert interpretation. The Noninvasive Cardiology Laboratory also performs electrocardiography, stress testing (including thallium stress tests and stress echocardiography), and Holter monitoring (a means of obtaining a 24-hour electrocardiogram). The outpatient services of this lab will be housed in the new Jean & David Blechman Cardiac & Vascular Center when that facility opens in January 2003.

Surgical Suites (Operating Rooms)
Our existing operating rooms enable us to provide quality cardiac and vascular surgery, but we are planning even more advanced space. With emerging technology and robotics playing an increasingly greater role in cardiovascular surgery, NYU Medical Center is planning to add two additional operating rooms in Tisch Hospital. These new operating rooms will be larger than the existing rooms, and will allow for greater access and facilitate the use of robotics and high-tech equipment.

Joan and Joel Smilow Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention Center
The new Jean & David Blechman Cardiac & Vascular Center will be complemented by its proximity to the existing Joan and Joel Smilow Cardiac and Rehabilitation Center of the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitative Medicine, located on the 9th floor of the HCC building. This is the largest cardiac inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and prevention program in the New York region. The Center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, recreational therapists, social workers, nutritionists, and exercise physiologists. Their goal is to get patients back to their normal activities as quickly as possible, and ensure that they maintain optimal cardiovascular health after they leave the Medical Center.
