Dr. Grau is actively involved with the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery's basic science laboratory. As a research fellow, his work in embryonic manipulation, the development of new trasfection vectors for in vivo and in vitro models, and the study of stem cell biology, was declared of national interest.
In tandem with the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery's international initiative, Dr. Grau will provide a vital link to the Latino community, facilitating easier access for Spanish-speaking physicians and their patients into NYU's cardiothoracic surgery program.
Currently, he is in charge of several exchange programs for students from different South American and Spanish Universities and works with residents completing their training in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. Consultations from Latino physicians and patients are conducted in English and Spanish, eliminating communication barriers that often interfere with diagnosis and treatment.
His areas of interest include the surgery of heart failure and ventricular remodeling, stenting of thoracic aortic aneurysms, surgical options for the treatment of atrial fibrillation and various valvular repair techniques, using minimally invasive approaches.
As a previous trauma surgeon with Bellevue Hospital Center, Grau is also recognized as an expert in the management of complex cardiac and thoracic injuries.
Dr. Grau's background, clinical training, and commitment to academics will provide a new and unique link to the Latino community in the surgical treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Grau is an advisor to the United Nations in health issues relating to the field of cardiovascular surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and American Board of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Grau serves as preceptor for third and fourth year medical students at NYU School of Medicine and is in charge of the research exchange programs for college students and medical students.
