New York, NY August 8, 2000 - On Tuesday, August 8th Stephen Colvin, M.D., Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Eugene Grossi, M.D., Director of the Cardiovascular Research Laboratory successfully telecast a minimally invasive mitral valve surgical repair from the operating theatre at NYU Medical Center.
The telecast was part of the tenth annual Rocky Mountain Valve Symposium hosted by The International Heart Institute of Montana Foundation in Missoula, Montana. The four-day workshop addressed issues related to valve repair and replacement including minimally invasive and video-assisted approaches currently being used. The telecast took place during Tuesday

morning's session, moderated by Carlos M. G. Duran, M.D., PhD, and Frederick Moore, M.D., with approximately 300 clinicians from around the world attending.
Mr. Allan Katz, President of VTS, Inc., provided the video and satellite engineering services for the telecast. During the procedure Dr. Colvin utilized robotic-enhanced visualization through the use of a 3-chip VTS endoscopic camera controlled by AESOP®, a voice-activated endoscope positioning system developed by Computer Motion. Sony's HDTV was also utilized for enhanced visualization during the procedure.
The purpose of the live telecast was to allow interactive discussion during the surgical procedure between the session's moderator and Dr. Colvin.
Additional information was provided by Dr. Grossi regarding the data and clinical follow-up of over 800 minimally invasive valve procedures performed at NYU Medical Center over the past three years.
