Información sobre nuestro programa de residencias
y becas de formación

The NYU Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency is a 2-year clinical
program. Incoming residents must have completed an ACGME approved
General Surgery residency training program and be board eligible
in General Surgery prior to beginning the NYU Cardiothoracic Residency.
Prior research experience is desirable but not mandatory.
The program has a rich history that emphasizes broad training in
both acquired and congenital cardiac surgery and general thoracic
surgery. The residents are given graded responsibilities over 2
years. The first year has three 4-month rotations, Manhattan VA
Hospital, NYU Blue (acquired cardiac), and NYU Red (general thoracic).
The second year also has three 4-month rotations, Bellevue Hospital,
NYU Blue service (acquired and congenital) and NYU Red service (acquired
and congenital). The three hospitals have a combined cardiac surgery
case volume that exceeds 1700 cases per year, with a similar large
number of general thoracic and thoracic oncology cases. The program
is widely recognized for special expertise in valvular surgery and
mitral valve repair, for minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic
surgery, for thoracic aneurysm repair and for advanced coronary
bypass techniques.
Upon completion of the Residency Program each resident will be expected
to have achieved competency and technical proficiency in the major
areas of general thoracic and cardiac surgery. They should have
a high fund of knowledge related to cardiac and thoracic diseases,
be proficient in pre and postoperative care and decision making,
and have exceeded the case volumes outlined by the American Board
of Thoracic Surgery. Upon completion of the program the resident
will be recommended for examination by the American Board of Thoracic
Surgery.
