Undergraduate
The Office of Diversity Affairs and the Sackler Institute for Graduate Biomedical Sciences co-sponsor the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) to train Sophomores and Juniors interested in careers in biomedicine. Students are placed in research laboratories or paired with physicians for a nine-week period of intensive training. The program includes seminars and extracurricular activities with other summer program participants in New York City Institutions and current students of NYU School of Medicine. SURP students also attend the Leadership Alliance Symposium at the end of their program and present their findings to other Leadership Alliance students and mentors. The Leadership Alliance is a consortium of top research institutions in the United States.
The office recruits students from institutions across the U.S. and Puerto Rico for the SURP program. SURP provides a great opportunity for undergraduate students to explore graduate and medical studies at NYU School of Medicine and life in New York City. Click here for more information on SURP.
Graduate and Medical
The Office of Diversity Affairs supports various student groups at NYU School of Medicine including the Black and Latino Student Association (BALSA) and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People in Medicine group (LGBTPM)
in implementing programs and addressing issues that impact underrepresented students. The office engages BALSA students in student, faculty, and trainee recruiting and retention activities and in reaching out to the community.
The Office guided the establishement of the NYC Minority Graduate Student Network (MGSN), an organization aimed at bringing together underrepresented minority graduate students in the biomedical sciences from all research institutions in the New York City metropolitan area (NYU-Sackler Institute, Albert Einstein CoM, Rockefeller University, Cornell University Weil Medical College, Hunter College-The Graduate Center, and Mount Sinai SoM). The office hosted the first meeting of the group which brought together over seventy students. The goals of the group include creating a community for minority students and developing opportunities for mentorship and professional development.
Postgraduate
The office works with the various departments to increase the number of talented postdocs and residents from underrepresented groups who join NYU School of Medicine (NYU SOM). It supports departments in developing and implementing recruiting and mentoring strategies and represents NYU SOM at national meetings and recruiting venues. The office also maintains contact with postdoctoral fellows and residents from underrepresented groups at NYU SOM and works with the various departments to improve mentoring and professional development programs and strategies.
Faculty Development and Leadership
The office recognizes that successful recruiting of talented faculty represents only part of the effort needed to maintain first class research and patient care at NYU Medical Center. Mentoring and professional development is as essential if not more important for sustaining the excellence to which the medical center aspires. The office engages departments and divisions in exploring and developing mentoring programs to ensure that faculty productivity and career development are institutional priorities that help us attract and retain the best talent.
