Examples of Major Changes (significant)
- Changes in purpose or specific aim of study
- Changes in principle investigator
- Changes in species
- Addition of USDA-regulated species
- Large increase in animal numbers
- Addition of survival surgery
- Addition of painful procedure
- Addition of minor surgery
Examples of Minor Changes
- Addition or change of funding agency
- Addition of personnel
- Addition of another strain of the same species
- Change in sex of animal to be used
- Small increase in animal numbers (<15%)
- Need to repeat experiment
- Addition of sample collection times
- Additional noninvasive sampling
Following procedures should be followed when submitting minor or major amendment:
Summarize amendment in a memorandum format. Include protocol number and the title.
Revise those pages of the protocol that pertain to the amendment and enclose them with your memorandum. Underline all changes.
Changes in procedure must be described in detail and should include the reason for change.
Request for increase in number of animals to be used must include a justification for additional animals. A breakdown of groups must be provided along with the rationale for choosing the number
of animals being requested.
