As residents we work hard, so we have to have lots of fun as well. The Residency Program is right in the heart of the New York, and our residents love to take advantage of what the City has to offer.
In New York there's always something going on. With street fairs, art exhibits, comedy clubs, independent films, and Broadway shows to choose from, every week there's something new to see or do. Two of the best sources for the latest news on events and activities are TimeOut New York and The Village Voice. There are lots of museums in the City, with new exhibits every season.
New York is famous for its endless variety of cuisine. One of the best websites to see what's new, what's cheap, and what's good is the Zagat Guide. Overnights in the hospital can be long and tiring. There isn't any type of food that can't be delivered day or night to Bellevue or NYU. A great site to search by location or cuisine and print out countless delivery menus is Menupages.com.
One of our favorite places to go and relax is Central Park. There are spots so peaceful and beautiful you won't believe you are in the middle of a city. Rollerblading, biking, running and other sports are favorite activities, but you can also rent a rowboat, have dinner at the boathouse on the lake, or see the animals at the Central Park Zoo. All summer long there are several free concerts a week at Summer Stage, or you can see a free play at Shakespeare in the Park. Close by is Bryant Park, where you can see a free outdoor movie every Monday during the Summer Film Festival.
Some other outdoor things to do include taking a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. On the other side you can have lunch or shop in Brooklyn Heights, and take a walk on the Promenade where you can see all of the east side of downtown Manhattan. There is a bicycle/walking path around most of the lower part of Mahnattan that is spectacular, especially at sunset, and has plenty of places to eat, drink, and watch live concerts during the summer. Close by, Long Island has over 150 beaches and some of our residents are avid surfers.
Another favorite hobby of our residents is camping. There are innumerous areas to camp a few hours away along the Catskills and in the Finger Lakes region, and many closer as well. Every year (soon to be semiannual) we have an Emergency Medicine Wilderness Weekend which includes camping, hiking, and each participating resident presenting a discussion of a wilderness topic such as poisonous plants and mushrooms, various infections, and first aid.
Several of our residents participate in marathons. The largest and most famous, the ING New York City Marathon, is held every year and consists of 35,000 athletes and more than 2 million spectators. Some of our less athletically inclined residents volunteer to help in the medical tents.
In addition, New York has awesome nightlife, coffee houses and shopping. Citysearch is a great was to find these and other things to do by neighborhood, and it rates them by popularity and price.
