NYU Emergency Medicine

Medical Toxicology Fellowship Curriculum

The training period is two years in duration. Fellows are employed at an appropriate PGY level in the Emergency Medicine Residency, and an academic title of Clinical Instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine will also be awarded to eligible fellows.

Program goals are achieved through the following:

Clinical Education
ellows provide the majority of physician back-up for the Certified Specialists in Poison Information (CSPI). The CSPI's are predominantly pharmacists, with advanced training in poison management, who are primarily responsible for case management and answer the majority of inquiries made of the New York City Poison Control Center. (more)

Didactic Education
Fellows present the active cases to other fellows and the faculty. An interactive discussion of patient care decisions optimizes patient care and permits fellow education using a nonjudgmental and informal format. (more)

Academic Development
Beginning in the middle of the first year, each fellow is encouraged to develop an area of interest under the mentorship of a medical toxicology faculty member. Although not absolute, this allows the fellow to develop a degree of expertise in one or several areas beyond that provided by the educational and clinical curriculum. (more)
