The overall structure of the Center is shown in Figure 1. The Director and Principal Investigator, Dr. Max Costa, provides overall leadership to the Center. Dr. Costa's responsibilities include oversight of the research and facilities cores, pilot project program, and the community outreach and education programs, appointment of Center members, development and establishment of the annual budget for the Center, and establishment of the organizational structure of the Center.
The Deputy Director, Dr. Terry Gordon, acts in the capacity of Director in the absence of Dr. Max Costa. Dr Gordon's responsibilities include the facilitation and integration of collaborative research activities. Dr. Gordon's primary responsibilities are to assist the director in making scientific and administrative decisions for the Center, fostering collaborative activities within the Research Cores and Facility Cores, evaluating the progress of the Research/Facility Cores in light of the Center's overall goals, assessing those areas of the Center that need strengthening, evaluating pilot projects, making recommendations for new research initiatives, and recruiting new faculty to the Center. He works with the director to make final decisions on the purchase of major equipment and the utilization of space and equipment within the Center.
Dr. Max Costa receives advice from the Internal Advisory Committee. The Internal Advisory Committee consists of the Research Core Directors (Drs. Shore, Lippmann, Gordon, and Rossman), as well as the Director of Pilot Projects (Dr. M-s. Tang), the Director of Community Outreach and Education Program (Dr. Thurston), the Director of the Facility Cores (Dr. Klein), and the Facility Core Directors (Drs. Maciejczyk, Bosland, Goldberg, and Klein). The Internal Advisory Committee meets monthly and is consulted in all matters related to the Center.
Excellent advice and counseling for our Center comes from the annual (and occasional semi-annual) meetings of the External Advisory Committee. The External Advisory Committee consists of scientific experts representing the various research concentrations within the Center. The External Advisory Committee has made numerous recommendations that have molded our Center's evolution. For example, the External Advisory Committee advised us to move forward in the area of microarrays and to foster this new initiative via Pilot Study funding, to purchase the Affymetrix chip technology, and to foster its usage in our Center by offering RFA pilot projects. The membership of our External Advisory Committee is reviewed on an annual basis by the Internal Advisory Committee with discussion of the availability and research interests of the external advisors. Recommendations for recruiting new members to the External Advisory Committee are made at that time. The current Committee members include:
