Director:
Ellen Shapiro, M.D.
Urologic diseases of childhood differ from those of adults in many respects often, requiring specialized diagnostic studies and treatments. Dr. Shapiro has established a pediatric urology team which provides a child-friendly environment to address the special needs of infants, children and adolescents with urologic disease.

She brings 20 years of surgical experience caring exclusively for pediatric urological disorders such as undescended testes, hernias, varicoceles, hypospadias, vesicoureteral reflux, prenatally-diagnosed hydronephrosis, neurogenic bladder and vaginal abnormalities. Dr. Shapiro works closely with obstetricians specializing in the prenatal diagnosis of hydronephrosis and provides prenatal counseling to expectant parents. The pediatric radiologists, pediatric anesthesiologists and other pediatric specialists at NYU Medical Center strive to provide excellence in service to children. Sonographic evaluation is available in the office to also expedite the care of children.
State-of-the-art videourodynamic testing is performed by our specialists in the Neurourology Program and, when indicated, Dr. Shapiro performs complex surgical reconstruction of the bladder. In conjunction with the Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery Program, laparoscopy can be performed when a kidney needs to be removed or an intra-abdominal testis requires orchiopexy.
Dr. Shapiro’s current research in pediatric urology focuses on the development of the human lower urinary tract using detailed histologic and three-dimensional reconstructive
techniques.
