NYU Offers Vascular Society Recommended Screening Program
April 18, 2007: The Society for Vascular Surgery today issued a statement in support of vascular disease screening tests, featured in an article in the Wall Street Journal.
NYU’s Division of Vascular Surgery offers vascular screenings comprised of 3 noninvasive tests. Patients receive test results the same day.
Upcoming Screenings
Thursday, April 19, 9-11 a.m.

Vascular disease screenings are offered by appointment only. To schedule an appointment on or after these dates, call (212) 263-3919 or email Patty Rodriguez, patty.rodriguez@med.nyu.edu.
NYU Named Trial Center for Aortic Aneurysm Stent
Vascular surgeons at NYU continue to be in the forefront of technology. Already
one of the leaders in endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, the division continues
to train surgeons from hospitals around the country in these techniques.
NYU has recently been named a trial center for a new aortic aneurysm stent
device. Furthermore, NYU surgeons are the investigators for a trial at the
Veterans Hospital in Manhattan comparing open versus endovascular repair
of Aortic aneurysms.
Carotid Duplex Performed on "The View"
In September, 2002, the NYU Vascular Laboratory and it's Director, Dr.
Glenn Jacobowitz, were featured on the ABC program "The View".
One of the hosts of the show underwent a carotid duplex ultrasound examination
at NYU The segment promoted this painless, non-invasive test which can
identify narrowing in the main arteries of the neck, the carotid arteries.
Plaque in these carotid arteries can break off and embolize to the brain,
which is one of the most common causes of stroke. By identifying these
plaques in the carotid arteries after warning signs, or by screening
people at high risk, potentially devastating strokes can be prevented.
When these plaques are identified, a 2 hour surgery called carotid endarterectomy
can be performed to clean out the plaque. NYU surgeons perform over 250
carotid endarterectomies every year for this disease.
The Vascular Laboratory at NYU and at the offices of NYU Vascular Associates
are both accredited labs with highly trained personnel, performing thousands
of duplex ultrasounds yearly. For information regarding scheduling a
carotid duplex ultrasound, please call 212-263-7311.
NYU Recognized as Center for Minimally Invasive Varicose Vein Surgery
NYU has become a center for minimally invasive varicose vein surgery.
Using several new techniques including the VNUS closure system, and Trivex
system, NYU vascular surgeons can perform varicose vein surgery and ablation
in the outpatient setting with fewer incisions and shorter recovery times.

A Leader in Carotid Artery Surgery Research
In March
2002, several papers regarding carotid artery surgery were presented
at the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, a national meeting in Las
Vegas, Nevada. In addition, NYU has been approved as a site for a randomized
trial comparing standard open surgery for carotid artery narrowing with
a carotid stent device.
NYU Vascular Associates Offering No Cost Stroke Screening
The division of vascular surgery is also conducting a no
cost stroke screening study involving a modified, quick ultrasound scan, rhythm EKG
strip and blood pressure measurements to evaluate patients at risk for
stroke. Almost 350 patients have been screened to date, and monthly screenings
are planned for spring.
