Doctors
The Hassenfeld doctors are a team of highly qualified doctors who are certified in pediatric hematology (blood disorders) or oncology (childhood cancers). They coordinate a patient’s care plan. Our doctors are involved in laboratory research, medical publications, education, and mentoring future physicians.
The Hassenfeld doctors work closely with all members of a patient’s care team to provide the highest quality medical care possible in a very personalized way. All patients are cared for by their primary hematologist or oncologist who will lead them through all major treatment decisions.
Patients will see their primary doctor for scheduled visits at Hassenfeld. Sometimes, though, patients may have to see another Hassenfeld doctor on the care team for unscheduled or unplanned visits to the clinic.
If you require an unscheduled visit, you may be seen by hematologist/oncologist on the treatment team.
If you (your child) are hospitalized during treatment, you will be seen daily by the inpatient residents attending hematologist/oncologist and regularly by your primary hematologist/oncologist.
The inpatient attending is a member of the treatment team and communicates regularly with your (child’s) primary hematologist/oncologist.
One of our Pediatric Hematologists/Oncologists is always on call and can be reached 24 hours a day by calling 212-263-8400.
Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs) have been enhancing the care of children for over thirty years.
Our Pediatric Nurse Practitioners are a team of registered nurses (RNs) with advanced training who are Master’s prepared, board certified, licensed professionals in pediatrics.
PNPs are qualified to perform complete physical exams, take health histories, diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses, order and interpret lab results and x-rays, prescribe medications, and provide health education to children and their families.
The PNP practice is holistic with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention and is supported by evidence-based knowledge.
Advanced health assessments and an understanding of disease pathophysiology are the foundations of the PNP role. Our PNPs work collaboratively with our physicians as well as the interdisciplinary team to provide the best possible care to patients and their families.
Registered Nurses
In addition to providing medical care in the clinic setting, our nurses act as part of an interdisciplinary team and are advocates and teachers who are by your side throughout the duration of treatment.
Hassenfeld nurses can help patients and families better understand their diagnosis and treatment, as well as help them communicate their needs and concerns to the appropriate interdisciplinary team members.
The NYU Medical Center is a Magnet institution and our nursing staff prides itself on providing excellent nursing care.
We strive to improve the quality of care patients and families receive by participating in ongoing quality improvement projects, and through education and continued professional development.
The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation recognizes that Hassenfeld Children’s Center is staffed by Oncology Certified Nurses.
