The Hassenfeld Center collaborates with clinical and academic partners to deliver the best possible care to our patients. We work closely with members of the NYU Medical Center in order to deliver continuity of care to our patients through inpatient services offered at Tisch and Bellevue hospitals.
Our affiliations with the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, the Department of Pediatrics at NYU School of Medicine, and the NYU Cancer Institute ensure that patients benefit from the most current advances in research and the expertise of experienced faculty members from a variety of disciplines.
Hassenfeld is also very proud to be part of the NCI-sponsored Children’s Oncology Group, the largest international cooperative research group that provides children with access to the most advanced treatments for cancer through involvement in clinical trials.
Children's Oncology Group
Children’s Oncology Group (COG) is an international research group that consists of more than 240 hospitals that treat children with cancer in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Switzerland and has grown out of several cooperative research groups established by the National Cancer Institute in 1955.
COG is considered the premier childhood cancer research organization in the world. It has treated more children with cancer than any other organization in history and has been responsible for many of the improvements in the treatment and cure rates of childhood cancers.
COG consists of more than 2,000 physicians that provide multi-specialty care of children with cancer. By treating children in clinical trials, COG members have increased the cancer cure rate for children from less than 10 percent in the 1950s to nearly 80 percent at present, in COG member hospitals.
COG members include experts in pediatric hematology, oncology and surgery, orthopedic and neurosurgery, radiology, radiation oncology and pediatric tumor pathology. They are joined by pediatric oncology nurses, pediatric oncology social workers, pharmacists, child life specialists, psychologists, nutritionists, clinical research associates and laboratory scientists who are specialists in many biomedical research disciplines related to cancer.
All COG members follow COG-defined protocols to prove their scientific, medical and ethical scientific expertise. To help develop new ways to treat children’s cancer, COG members submit diagnostic, treatment and follow-up data to the COG Research Data Center.
Because the data from many patients are combined, clinical trials obtain results more rapidly and new treatments are developed hundreds of times faster. In addition to finding cures, research is aimed at reducing therapy for lower risk patients to lessen the side effects, both during treatment and later in life. The Hassenfeld Center is very pleased to be a member of the Children’s Oncology Group.
NYU Department of Pediatrics
The NYU Department of Pediatrics is a prominent training ground and clinical base at the forefront of the battles against children's AIDS, children's cancers, cardiovascular malformations, genetic diseases, lung disease of pre-term infants, child abuse, children's poisonings and pediatric emergency care.
NYU Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
Hassenfeld physicians and clinical trials/research staff are part of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at NYU School of Medicine, an academically oriented program that is committed to providing modern, family centered and highly personalized care to children with cancer and blood diseases. As part of the Department of Pediatrics, the Division strives for excellence in patient care, teaching, research and advocacy for children with cancers and blood disorders.
Research into the causes of the conditions we treat and the development of more effective therapy is one of the cornerstones of the Division. Our faculty members engage in basic and clinical research and are knowledgeable in the most up to date treatments. The Division also focuses on training new generations of pediatricians and pediatric hematologists/oncologists through our Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program.
NYU Medical Center’s Tisch Hospital and the Rusk Institute
Hassenfeld patients receive inpatient care at the 35-bed pediatric unit of Tisch Hospital on 9-East. Our physicians and Nurse Practitioners care for the patients as both as inpatients and outpatients to ensure that all care is coordinated and continuous. The Nursing staff at NYUMC is nationally recognized for its Magnet status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The award recognizes the high caliber of nursing care provided to patients in all settings.
The Rusk Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine is a leader in providing inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and psychological services, specifically tailored to the needs of children.
Bellevue Hospital
Bellevue Hospital is the flagship of the public hospitals owned and operated by the Health & Hospitals Corporation of New York City. For more than 100 years, physicians from the NYU School of Medicine have served the people of New York at Bellevue.
The Special Hematology Laboratory located in Bellevue Hospital is part of the Bellevue Division of Laboratories and Dr. Margaret Karpatkin serves as Director of the lab. The laboratory provides services for patients at Bellevue and five other New York Health and Hospital Corporation hospitals. It also provides lab services for Tisch patients, including the Hassenfeld Children’s Center.
NYU Cancer Institute
Hassenfeld Children’s Center is part of the NYU Cancer Institute, one of only 61 National Institutes of Health (NIH)-designated cancer centers in the nation. Hassenfeld’s Medical Director, Dr. William Carroll, also serves as Deputy Director of the NYU Cancer Institute.
The NYU Cancer Institute is renowned for its focus on patient care, research, education and prevention. Clinical care for adults is offered at the NYU Clinical Cancer Center. This 13-level, 85,000-square-foot facility, located at 160 East 34th Street, offers the latest in cancer prevention, screening, diagnostic, treatment, genetic counseling, and support services for adults with cancer.
