With some of the best survival rates in the nation, NYU Medical Center gives
its transplant patients reason to expect positive outcomes. It offers transplantation
of the liver and kidney - including living-donor procedures - as well as
pancreas and lung. Since its inception in 1980, more than 600 transplants
have been performed, making the transplant team among the most experienced
in the world. And through its association with NYU School of Medicine, the
Center is dedicated to advancing the field through research, focusing on
the following:
• establishing new bridges to transplantation, including
liver dialysis and plasma exchange, to improve the health of those awaiting
organs;
• developing a cutting-edge treatment for hepatocellular
carcinoma;
• developing minimally invasive procedures that
make transplantation a safer, less traumatic option; and
• investigating new immunosuppressive medications
with fewer and milder side effects.
The liver transplant program at NYU Medical Center ranks first in the nation
for 1-year graft survival.
Living-donor transplants of the liver or kidney often provide the healthiest
possible organs, as well as the best matches. A major focus of the Transplant
Center, living donation is the preferred alternative for many patients (especially
those requiring kidney transplants), freeing them from untold months they
might otherwise need to wait for a donated organ.
