Every institution has its own distinct culture. One of the characteristics that distinguishes NYU School of Medicine and its Department of Medicine is what I call the culture of Bellevue.

Bellevue is the oldest public hospital in the United States, and it has been at the center of our clinical and educational mission. Bellevue is all about service, about giving the best care possible to patients no matter who they are or how much money they have.

Patients at Bellevue, Tisch Hospital, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center all receive care from the same faculty, house staff, and students. That ethos, developed over more than 150 years of service, is deep in the culture of NYU and shapes everything we do.

My overriding goal for the Department of Medicine is to help carry that torch and pass it to the next generation.
