Research Overview

The Division of Cardiology is home to vibrant, externally funded basic, translational, and clinical research programs. The Divisional research portfolio has increased to over $5,000,000 annually, with grants from agencies including the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, Burroughs-Wellcome Fund, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, amongst others.

Much of the basic and translational cardiovascular investigation within the Medical Center is organized under the auspices of the NYU Program in Cardiovascular Biology, which is located in the new Joan and Joel Smilow Translational Research Center. Two floors in this state-of-the-art research facility, totalling 24,000 sq. ft. of space, are devoted to cardiovascular investigation, including the research programs of Drs. Glenn I. Fishman, Edward A. Fisher and Gregory E. Morley.  Dr. Silvia Priori, one of the world’s leading experts in the genetics of arrhythmias, has recently joined the faculty of the Division of Cardiology as Director of the new Cardiovascular Genetics Program. Dr. Priori’s basic and translational research efforts, which are directed toward understanding arrhythmic mechanisms and identifying novel genetic therapies, will also be located in the Smilow Center.

Over the past several decades, clinical research activities in the Division of Cardiology have contributed substantially to the cardiovascular literature and have greatly influenced the practice of clinical cardiology. In 2003 the Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center (CVCRC) was established under the direction of Dr. Judith Hochman. Considering one of the world’s leading cardiovascular clinical trialists, Dr. Hochman’s studies in the areas of cardiogenic shock and coronary artery disease have transformed the guidelines for treating patients with heart disease.  The CVCRC serves as the clinical coordinating center for international and national multicenter trials and as the organizing entity for numerous local trials as well. The CVCRC has substantially increased patient enrollment in a wide range of clinical trials and has helped administer the division's expanding portfolio of clinical trials.

Most recently, Dr. Stuart D. Katz has joined the Division of Cardiology as Director of the NYU-Langone Heart Failure Program.  A nationally prominent NIH-funded clinical investigator, Dr. Katz has made major contributions to our understanding of endothelial dysfunction in patients with heart failure and he is exploring novel therapies for patients with cardiovascular disease.

We encourage you to examine the varied research interests of investigators in the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology as well as some of their recent publications.
