Michael L. Freedman, MD; Associate Professor of Medicine; Fellowship Director, General Internal Medicine

Michael L. Freedman, MD joined the New York University faculty in 1969 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Since 1974, he has served as Director of the Division of Geriatrics and the NYU University Medical Center for Aging and is also Director of the Diane and Arthur Belfer Geriatric Center at NYU Medical Center. He received his MD cum laude from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Freedman did his Internal Medicine internship and residency at NYU/Bellevue Hospital Center. He trained in Hematology at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, and served there as a research investigator. Dr. Freedman has served as consultant in both Hematology and Geriatrics to numerous governmental agencies, as well as to universities and corporations.

Dr. Freedman has written over 200 scientific papers, textbook chapters, and reviews. He has presented over 500 abstracts at various meetings, and is the author of two books. Dr. Freedman’s research interests have been in iron metabolism and the role of iron in protein synthesis; purification of globin chain messenger RNA; initiation of protein synthesis; sickle cell anemia; control of platelets in the peripheral blood; biology of aging; B12 metabolism and its relationship to dementia; and glucose metabolism in Alzheimer’s disease. He is currently working on the role of oxidation and apoptosis in Alzheimer’s disease.
