The Firm System

The medical student teaching service is divided into eight Firms, named in honor of distinguished figures in the history of the Department of Medicine. Each Firm is led by a Firm Chief responsible for overseeing the progress of the educational program during the clerkship.

The Firm Chiefs meet monthly to coordinate changes in the teaching plan. They also serve as ongoing resources to the faculty and students, directing educational strategy and providing personal mentoring for the remainder of the students' medical school career. The following is a list of the eight Firms and their current Chiefs:

  • Saul J. Farber Firm — Martin L. Kahn, M.D.
  • Austin Flint Firm — Ruth Oratz, M.D.
  • Edward C. Franklin Firm — Jerome Lowenstein, M.D.
  • Ira Goldstein Firm — Elizabeth H. Weinshel, M.D.
  • Linda Laubenstein Firm — Michael L. Freedman, M.D.
  • H. Sherwood Lawrence Firm — Anthony J. Grieco, M.D.
  • Bertha Rader Firm — Mitchell H. Charap, M.D.
  • Lewis Thomas Firm — Doreen J. Addrizzo-Harris, M.D.
