Department of Medicine Undergraduate Teaching Program

Associate Chair for Education: Anthony J. Grieco, M.D.

The central goal of the NYU School of Medicine undergraduate curriculum is to develop physician-scientists who will approach the practice of medicine with intellectual discipline, compassion, and rigorous professionalism.

The curriculum is continually being reassessed and refined to better enable students to use the scientific principles of medicine in the evaluation and treatment of the sick. In fall 2001 the basic science courses were reorganized into thematic modules composed of interrelated units. Traditional lecture hours were reduced, and the educational program now employs teaching methodologies specifically designed to nurture a progressively more independent and self-reliant student.

The clinical sciences core curriculum consists of nine core clerkships. Although the basic element of teaching in the clinical clerkship is bedside instruction, skills are developed through multiple media that reinforce interactive, interdisciplinary learning.

The Department of Medicine is responsible for the education of NYU medical students through all four years of the undergraduate program. In addition to the required courses, the department offers a wide variety of subspecialty electives and clinical and research experiences. Many Department of Medicine faculty members also teach courses in the basic science departments.
