Subspecialty Electives

The Subspecialty Electives of the Department of Medicine give students in-depth exposure for one- and two-month periods to cardiology, diabetes and metabolism, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonary disease and critical care, and rheumatology.

As part of the electives, students join senior members of the various subspecialty groups on their consultation rounds, learn and participate in special procedures of the subspecialty, attend subspecialty clinics, and join the section in their conferences and journal clubs.

During the elective periods, students may seek assignments with the department's research laboratories. They are also are encouraged to participate in the Honors Program or to pursue a two-month Independent Study Project in basic science or clinical research.
