World Kidney Day 2008 at NYU

Drs. Ed Skolnik and Olga Zhdanova at World Kidney Day 2008 at NYU School of Medicine.

The first World Kidney Day recognized by the NYU Nephrology Division was a great success.

The National Kidney Foundation Greater New York Division President, Ingrid Montecino, said:

"Our congratulations to Drs. Ed Skolnik and David Goldfarb and their nephrology team at NYU Medical Center for hosting an educational day and screening on World Kidney Day (Thursday, March 13, 2008). [Ed Skolnik is the Director of the Division Nephrology in the Department of Medicine and David Goldfarb is Clinical Chief of the Nephrology Division at the NYU Medical Center.] Efforts such as these are vital to spreading the word about kidney disease and the importance of early detection."

Woman reads poster about Chronic Kidney Disease.   We screened 115 people with measurement of blood pressure, urine protein excretion and estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Many more people received educational material and asked important questions about kidneys and kidney disease.

There were many kidney-related organizations who appeared and helped us distribute information about kidney health. These included NephCure, National Kidney Foundation, the local chapters of the Polycystic Kidney Disease foundations, the American Society of Hypertension, the NYU transplant program and the NYU Hemodialysis unit, and the Lupus Foundation. We appreciated corporate support from Genzyme, Astellas, and Gambro.
