NYUHC Nursing NICU

  • The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit team works collaboratively to provide optimal care in a supportive family-centered environment.
  • This 29-bed Level III NICU unit has a serene family-friendly atmosphere in accordance with the goals of the Developmental Care Program, which address the developmental needs of the newborn by providing a low stimulation environment and advocating for parental participation in care
  • Winner of the Advance for Nurses, 2007 Best Nursing Team: Above and Beyond
  • Our primary patient population consists of infants born prematurely or who are in need of special medical and or surgical care at birth including but not limited to:
    • Extreme very low birth weight infants
    • Neurosurgical, cranio-facial, cardiac, orthopedic and general surgery
    • Epilepsy and Video EEG
    • High frequency JET/ oscillating ventilation
  • As an NICU staff member you will collaborate closely and become part of an interdisciplinary team
  • No prior neonatal experience required
  • 12 weeks orientation with both clinical and classroom training taught by our Nursing Education Department.  New graduates have a split session:  6 weeks followed by a 4-week buddy system with their preceptor focusing on less acute infants. Then, after 6-9 months of clinical practice, another 6 weeks of orientation and 4 weeks of buddy system caring for the critically ill Intubated and post surgical patients. This customized orientation process allows for a less stressful learning experience and enables the new nurse to develop her/his critical care thinking skills.
