While patient care is the primary objective of the nursing staff, many nurses at NYU are able to use their skills and expertise to contribute to professional nursing research as well, through publications, presentations, and poster sessions. Many of our Advanced Practice Nurses have made significant contributions to the nursing field.

    • Dr. Wendy Budin, Director of Nursing Research and Dr. Frances Cartwright, Director of Nursing, Oncology Services along with their colleague, Dr. Carol Hoskins, Senior Research Scientist, at NYU College of Nursing, had their manuscript “The Breast Cancer Treatment Response Inventory: Development, Psychometric Testing, and Refinement for Use in Practice” published in the March issue of  Oncology Nursing Forum, the official journal of the Oncology Nursing Society. This is a significant achievement adding to the  knowledge on the evolving concept of symptom experience which includes symptom clusters and the synergistic effect of numerous concurrent symptoms, and the impact of symptom clusters on health outcomes. A major gap in the research and clinical practice literature is that none of the existing instruments can measure all aspects of symptom experience of women with breast cancer, including the number of symptoms, severity of symptoms and amount of distress experienced as well as symptom clusters, the way this instrument can. A major aim of the researchers is to get this instrument into the practice areas. In addition to the publication of this article,  Dr. Cartwright will presenting an instructional session about symptom experience using the BCTRI at the ONS conference in May, and Dr. Budin will be presenting a paper on symptom experience of women with breast cancer at the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS) Conference in March.
