Overview of Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York University School of Medicine is pleased to continue its women's health initiatives and support of leading edge, research-based care throughout the tri-state area with the development of the NYU Program for Urogynecology.
The Urogynecology Program is a component of the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, which is under the direction of Robert F. Porges, MD. Consultations, diagnostic testing and various treatments are provided by Dr. Scott W. Smilen.
The program offers state-of-the-art diagnostic modalities, including multichannel urodynamics and urethrocystoscopy, for all forms of incontinence and pelvic floor disorders. A comprehensive array of medical and surgical treatment modalities is utilized, including behavioral modification, pelvic muscle rehabilitation, biofeedback and electrical stimulation techniques, pharmacologic therapy and use of the latest minimally invasive treatments. Patients also benefit from educational literature, referrals to support groups, and most of all, continuity of care by gynecologists who specialize in urinary and fecal control problems of women. A "patient friendly" model has been developed to meet the specialized needs of women with these problems.
Consultation and treatment options are available for women with injuries to the birth canal and pelvic floor, either due to childbirth injuries or progressive weakness of these tissues from age or disability. The faculty also has substantial experience with congenital malformations of the reproductive tract that may manifest itself at birth, during childhood, or in young adults.
