Residency Education/Medical Student Electives - Objectives

Specific objectives for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology rotation are outlined below and are based on recommendations published previously (A.D. Lascari et al Am J Ped Hem Onc. 8: 245-47,1986)

1) To develop a differential diagnosis and work up for*:

Anemia
Neutropenia
Thrombocytopenia
Thrombocytosis
Pancytopenia
Adenopathy
Splenomegaly
Abdominal mass
Mediastanal mass
Thrombosis
Bruising and bleeding


2) To understand the diagnosis, pathophysiology and management of the following hematological conditions:

*Hemophilia, Von Willebrand disease
*Vitamin K deficiency
Congenital thrombocytopenia
Platelet function disorders
*Disseminated intravascular coagulation
Hemolytic uremic syndrome
Immune thrombocytopenia, anemia, neutropenia
*Red blood cell membrane defects
*Hemoglobinopathies
Red blood cell enzymes defects
Transient erytroblastopenia
Aplastic anemia


3) To be familiar with the diagnosis, molecular basis and management of the following oncological conditions:

* Pathogenesis of Childhood cancer
*Acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Acute myelogenous leukemia
Histiocytosis
Hodgkin's disease
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
*Brain tumors
Neuroblastoma
Renal tumors
Bone and soft tissue sarcomas
Retinoblastoma
Hepatic tumors


4) To understand the principles of therapy of commonly encountered hematological and oncological conditions*:

Chemotherapy
Transfusion therapy, pheresis therapy
Management of coagulopathy
Management of sickle cell disease/thalassemia and transfusional hemochromatosis
Tumor lysis syndrome and other oncological emergencies
Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
Management of fever and neutropenia
