International Medicine Pediatric Elective
This is a six-week elective open to four third-year pediatric residents per year interested in tropical medicine, HIV and international health. It is designed to broaden their didactic knowledge, clinical experience, research awareness, and laboratory competency in tropical medicine and HIV as practiced in resource-poor settings.
The resident will spend time at two health facilities in Kenya in order to gain exposure to both outpatient and in-patient pediatric medicine as practiced in sub-Saharan Africa.
Locations
Through structured clinical experiences at Kilifi District Hospital and The Coast General Hospital, Mombasa, both in the Coast Province of Kenya, residents will develop skills needed for working with immigrant communities in the United States as well with populations in international health settings.
The facilities at the AIDS Research and Family Care Clinic (ARFCC) in Coast General Hospital will provide the outpatient component of this elective. The ARFCC is under the direction of Dr. Shaffiq Essajee, one of the pediatric faculty at NYU.
Over the course of four weeks, the resident will become a key team member at Kilifi District Hospital. In particular, the elective participant will function as a senior resident on the pediatric inpatient ward and high dependency unit. Responsibilities will include supervising other medical personnel, as well as assisting in procedures such as lumbar punctures, intubations and central line placement.
Requirements
Upon completion of the elective and returning to NYU, participants are expected to make a presentation to the rest of the department highlighting an aspect of the clinical experience that they obtained in Kenya.
