The Pediatric Endocrinology Laboratory is essentially a steroid laboratory in which a variety of RIA's, chromatographic techniques, and others for assay of steroid hormones are performed, e.g. testosterone, 17-OH progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), etc.
These and other methods including HPLC are taught by Dr. Kris Prasad, PhD. who is in charge of the laboratory, with the help of a technician.
Fellows are introduced to these methods during the latter part of their first year of training, and the process is expanded during subsequent years so that the trainee should be capable of performing all assays independently.
Data and their interpretation are regularly reviewed by the laboratory supervisor, as well as by the Endocrine Attending Staff. Other methods including radioreceptor assays, immunocytochemistry, tissue culture methodology are taught, as needed for specific projects.
