Patient Care

Comprehensive Care

At an initial evaluation, an extensive history is obtained and a comprehensive examination performed. When indicated, tests are performed to confirm diagnosis, assess current status and provide information for the development of a personalized treatment plan.

Treatment Plans

After the evaluation, a thorough report is written with impressions and recommendations. This report is sent to the referring physician and other health care providers as requested by the parents. If a diagnosis of FD is confirmed, then the patient is seen annually to modify treatment programs as indicated.

Special Studies

The Center is able to perform specialized quantitative measurements of sensory and autonomic function including:

  • autonomic tests such as tilt testing, heart rate variability, baroreflex measurement, sympathetic skin reflex, sweat tests

  • sensory tests such as determination of warm and cold temperature thresholds, pain sensation, vibration thresholds

In addition the Center can perform histamine tests and Schirmer tear flow tests.

Referral to appropriate specialists

The Center works closely with a number of physicians who have developed expertise in treating the unique problems associated with FD and other HSAN. Referral to these individuals is facilitated by the Clinic Coordinator.
