Fellows in this program develop expertise in general pediatrics through experience and training at Bellevue Hospital Center, which is the flagship public hospital of the Health and Hospitals Corporation, New York City's public hospital system.
Bellevue Hospital Center provides care to underserved populations in New York City and is a primary teaching site of the Department of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine.
Bellevue's pediatric clinic has approximately 65,000 visits each year and serves families of diverse ethnicities who travel from all five boroughs of New York City to receive care.
Primary Care Pediatrics
Fellows serve as preceptors for housestaff and medical students in clinics providing preventive and acute care. Fellows also provide care for families in their own continuity clinics.
Adolescent Medicine
Fellows participate in a weekly after-school continuity clinic for adolescents. This clinic provides preventive care and addresses reproductive health, sports medicine and psychosocial issues in adolescents.
Child Protection
Fellows participate in assessment of suspected child abuse at the Bellevue Hospital Center Child Protection and Development Center. Fellows are trained in assessment of both physical and sexual abuse.
Chronic Disease Management
Fellows participate in two clinics related to chronic disease:
Inpatient Pediatrics
Fellows gain experience as attending physicians on two inpatient services, the Bellevue Hospital low-risk nursery, and the general pediatric inpatient ward.
In both settings, fellows initially serve as co-attendings with a member of the Division of General Pediatrics, then in an independent role at a later date
