Norman Thomas High School, 111 East 33rd Street
P.S. 51 (The Elias Howe School), 520 West 45th Street
Two school-based health centers in Manhattan are sponsored by Bellevue Hospital Center under the supervision of the Pediatric Resource Center (PRC), and supported in part by service and training grants from the New York State Department of Health.
These sites provide excellent educational experiences in community health to a wide variety of health professionals in training, including medical students, pediatric residents, nurse practitioner students, and dental students and residents.
Under a grant program from the New York State Department of Health, the PRC and the NYU School of Medicine have developed specific clinical and didactic experiences and a core curriculum in school-based health care for medical students and pediatric residents.
Norman Thomas High School
The school-based health center at Norman Thomas High School has enrolled over 75% of the school's 2800 students. With a staff of nurse practitioners, a pediatrician, social workers, and a health aide, the center provides daily medical, dental, and mental health services on school days throughout the year.
Routine health maintenance, chronic illness management, and minor acute illness care are all provided on site, and referrals to Bellevue Hospital are available for specialty care consultations. Group and individual counseling is provided by trained social work staff.
Routine preventive dental care and referral services are also provided on site. The involvement of medical students from NYU has resulted in the development of a peer-led nutrition education program targeting health eating and exercise routines.
P.S. 51 (The Elias Howe School)
The school-based health center at P.S. 51 offers health maintenance, chronic illness management, minor acute illness care, and preventive dental services to all 300 students in the school.
Nurse practitioners at the site have developed parent education programming, and NYU pediatric residents have provided an after-school nutrition and exercise program for fourth and fifth grade students.
