Bellevue Hospital Center Regional Perinatal Center

Bellevue Regional Perinatal CenterThe NYU School of Medicine Division of Neonatology oversees the Neonatal Program at Bellevue Hospital Center, a Regional Perinatal State (RPC) Designated Level IV Center. The RPC is a comprehensive integrated program that is committed to the provision of excellent family centered care to women and children in the community and to women and children from all referral hospitals.

The Level IV Regional Perinatal Center at Bellevue Hospital has been a New York State designated Center since 1979.
The designation of the RPC at the Neonatal level is a New York State contract joining the two Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) of Bellevue Hospital Center and Jacobi Medical Center NICU as one RPC. The RPC designation indicates New York State accreditation for the highest level of care and care for the highest acuity.

Bellevue and Jacobi are the only two Health and Hospital Corporation (HHC) hospitals with a Regional Perinatal Center designation. The RPC designation requires that the Center provide transport service to referral Hospitals to transport critically ill infants back to Bellevue to provide the highest level of intensive care and surgical care as is required by the RPC designation.

Although there are hospital affiliations with the center, no hospital without an affiliation with the center would be turned away should they require assistance. There are 25 beds at Bellevue's RPC. Infants are transported to the NICU on the basis of their need for care.

Over 380 high risk infants are cared for annually at the Bellevue RPC. The In born community population served at Bellevue Hospital that require intensive care are 67% Hispanic, 15%African-American, 13% Asian and 5% other nationalities of the newly immigrated.

There is a New York State designated Regional Perinatal Center Neonatal Comprehensive Continuing Care Program (NCCCP) for graduates of the RPC and other NICU's that was initiated in 1992. Early intervention evaluation services and comprehensive family support and education are provided.
