Dr. Daniel Rauch Honored by Society of Hospital Medicine
Dr. Daniel Rauch, Director, Pediatric Hospitalist Program and Assistant Director, Pediatric Residency, was the recipient of the the Society of Hospital Medicine's 2007 Award for Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine.
The award, given in recognition of exceptional service in the discipline of hospital medicine, was presented at the Society's President's Luncheon in Dallas, Texas, on May 25, 2007.
Dr. Rauch is an active member of the Society, serving on the Pediatrics and Benchmarks Committees. Additionally, he sits on the Executive Committee of the hospital medicine section and is a member of the National Committee on Residential Scholarships for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Rauch has done extensive work with the AHRQ Pediatric Quality Indicators Project, resulting in an invitation to serve on the National Quality Forum Pediatric Technical Advisory Panel, as part of the National Consensus Standards for Hospital Care.
In his "spare" time, he remains active in medical education as a member of the Executive Committee of the Ambulatory Pediatrics Association Education Committee and as faculty of the APA Educational Scholars Program. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Children's Dream Foundation, serves on the Advisory Board for USMLE Today, works as a reviewer for the Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Care, Healthscout.com, Medline Plus, and ADAM.
He also served on the planning committees for the first national Pediatric Hospital Medicine meeting, "Pediatric Hospitalists in Academic Settings," in 2003 that led to the tri-sponsored (by the AAP, APA and SHM) conference "Pediatric Hospital Medicine 2005." He now serves on the planning committee for "Pediatric Hospital Medicine 2007."
Dr. Karen Hendricks-Muñoz Inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha
Dr. Karen Hendrics-Muñoz, Director, Division of Neonatology, was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha as a faculty member by NYU School of Medicine Delta chapter.
AOA is the only national honor medical society in the world and was established to recognize and perpetuate excellence in medicine.
As stated in the society's consitution, "Alpha Omega Alpha is organized for educational purposes exclusively and not for profit, and its aims shall be the promotion of scholarship and research in medical schools, the encouragement of a high standard of character and conduct among medical students and graduates, and the recognition of high attainment in medical science, practice, and related fields."
Up to two alumni/alumnae members and two faculty members may be elected to AOA in recognition of individuals who have distinguished themselves in their professional careers.
Dr. Donna O'Hare Wins Berson Medical Alumni Achievement Award
Dr. Donna O'Hare, Professor of Pediatrics, was awarded the Solomon A. Berson Medical Alumni Achievement Award in Health Science. This accolade is awarded to a graduate of the NYU School of Medicine who has distinguished himself or herself by major accomplishments in advancing health care.
Named for the late Dr. Solomon A. Berson, Class of 1945, three alumni achievement awards—Basic Science, Clinical Science, and Health Science—are presented each year at Medical Alumni Weekend in his honor.
Dr. O'Hare is a 1958 graduate of the NYU School of Medicine.
Dr. Perri Klass Wins Women's National Book Association Award
Professor Perri Klass, M.D. was recently announced as the recipient of the 2006 Women's National Book Association Award, presented to American women who have done "meritorious work in the world of books beyond the duties or responsibilities of her profession or occupation." She will be honored in a ceremony on December 3.
Klass earned her M.D. degree at Harvard University Medical School, did a pediatric residency, and is a professor in Pediatrics and Journalism. Her writing has included columns for the New York Times, Discover, and other literary and popular publications; and she has received O.Henry awards for her short fiction. Klass is also the president of Reach Out and Read, a literacy program.
Klass is the author of three novels, The Mystery of Breathing (2004), Other Women’s Children (1990), and Recombinations (1985), and two collections of short stories, Love and Modern Medicine (2001), and I Am Having an Adventure (1986). Her other books include Quirky Kids: Understanding and Helping Your Child Who Doesn’t Fit In (coauthored with Eileen Costello, M.D., 2003) and Every Mother Is a Daughter (coauthored with Sheila Solomon Klass, 2006).
