The Infectious Diseases and Immunology Division has laboratories in 3 areas of the pediatrics floor (8th) of Bellevue Hospital. These rooms include 7 lab bays with 14 bench tops. The lab contains equipment which provide the ability to perform all possible virology and immunology studies.

Major equipment includes:

• 1 biohazard hood vented to the hospital exhaust for use with respiratory pathogens
• 1 Becton-Dickenson flow cytometer with 3 filters to accommodate 3 color analysis
• 1 Q-Prep machine for processing samples for cytometry
• 1 ultracentifuge
• 10 standing centrifuges (4 IEC refrigerated,3 clinical,1 Sorvall RC5C, 2 IEC)
• 4 microcentrifuges (1 refrigerated)
• 6 water baths (1 New Brunswick shaking bath)
• 6 balances
• 7 refrigerators
• 11 freezers (5, -700 C; 2, -1350 C; 4, -200 C)
• 1 liquid nitrogen tank
• 4 CO2 incubators
• 1spectro-photometer
• 1 phase tissue culture microscope
• 1 phase fluorescence microscope
• 1 Betaplate scintillation counter with cell harvester
• 1 microtome
• 2 ELISA readers
• 1 UV transilluminator with camera apparatus
  and 3 PCR devices (1 Perkin Elmer 48 well refrigerated PCR machine, 1 ABI 7700 real-time PCR machine)
• 4 vertical (including 1 sequencing) and 3 horizontal gel electophoresis chambers, with 3 power sources
• several liquid chromatography columns with a fraction collector
• 3 dot blot and 1 slot blot vacuum apparatuses
• 1 Bayer DNA sequencer

• assorted devices (1 plate washer,1 diluter,1 PH meter,1 plate shaker,2 vortexers,2 heat blocks, 4 stirrer/hot plates)
• 1 camera setup with UV light box
• 2 lab computers(1 286 20MB hard drive with dot matrix printer which is used to run the betaplate reader and one of the ELISA readers,1 386 200MB hard drive with modem and HPIIP printer used for freezer storage, patient databases and communication with FSTRF).

The Division of Adult Infectious Diseases has additional equipment used for research in immunology and virology (particularly AIDS) which includes a scintillation counter and a gamma counter, to which we have access.
