The rotations in ambulatory pediatrics focus on the following:
- delivery of primary preventive and longitudinal care to healthy children
- delivery of episodic care to acutely ill children
- the management of children with a variety of chronic disorders of varying complexity and severity
- the assessment, treatment and referral of children with developmental disabilities or behavioral disorders
The educational goals of these rotations include:
- an understanding of principles of behavioral science, child development, epidemiology, clinical immunology, and nutrition
- the application of the above principles to interviewing, counseling, prevention, and screening in clinical practice
- the recognition of aberrant development and behavior
- the management of common acute or chronic medical conditions
Cognitive competencies include:
- general screening procedures
- immunization schedules
- developmental assessment (e.g., Denver Developmental Examination)
Technical competencies are multiple and include procedures such as soft tissue injections, pneumatic otoscopy, tympanometry, and pelvic examination.
