Clinical Education Program On-Call Assignments

All residents assigned to in-patient block rotations, including the intensive care units, have a total of seven overnight calls per 28-day rotation, averaging out to one call every four days.

The "night float" week begins on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. (until 7:30am Saturday) and ends on the following Friday morning. Sunday call is for a full 24 hours beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 7:00 a.m. on Monday. The housestaff on "night float" have no clinical responsibilities until Monday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m.

For the remaining four nights (Monday through Thursday), call begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 7:00 a.m. the following day. Thus, by Friday morning of the "night float" week, the housestaff has completed the majority of call responsibilities and has an entire weekend free from clinical responsibilities.

The remaining call on the in-patient block rotation is a 24-hour Saturday call (7:30 a.m. Saturday until Sunday at 8:00 a.m.).

Call in the pediatric emergency service (PES) occurs during PES block rotations and is arranged as overlapping shifts, which include overnight coverage. First year residents work daytime shifts, while overnight shifts are covered by Second and Third year residents as part of blocks of consecutive calls similar to the in-patient ward "night float" week described above.
