Elective Policy
There is currently a change ongoing at NYU that involves out-electives. The final policy has not been issued, but below is a summary from the University’s House Staff Council meetings of the arrangements to this point (which may be subject to change):
There is a new procedure for out-electives. All out-electives must now be approved by the Position Control Board (PCB), which meets monthly on the 4th Tuesday of each month. The hospital is operating under increasing financial challenges and it has become difficult, from a financial perspective, to allow house staff to pursue off-campus electives. However, all electives that complete an ACGME training requirement which is not offered on our campus will be approved. Also, electives that are funded or reimbursed will, in all likelihood, be approved. But all electives will be reviewed by the PCB on a case by case basis. House staff are encouraged to submit their out-elective requests early – at least two months prior – to ensure that the PCB has time to review the request; and to ensure that the house staff member will have time to make travel or living arrangements. There has also been a change in malpractice insurance coverage for out-electives. In the future, the hospital where the resident is rotating will be required to provide malpractice coverage. NYU will provide malpractice coverage for all house staff who rotate at our institution, and institutions that accept our residents for rotations will be required to provide coverage for our residents as well.
As of July 1, 2007 the policy for the department allows 7 months of out-electives, or 2 weeks per resident without receiving Control Board approval.
