Elective Info

Elective rotations are provided for third and fourth year medical students.

Every year, 18-28 medical students from NYU and 18-28 students from other medical schools spend time at the Rusk Institute as well as Bellevue, Veterans Affairs, and Orthopedic Institute clinics.

Students are included in the rich academic program for the house staff and are given progressively greater responsibilities in caring for in-patient and ambulatory rehabilitation patients.

Each elective student will be assigned to a specific team and will work directly with a resident assigned to that team in the capacity of a sub-intern.

ELECTIVE STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Students will be responsible for all aspects of patient care under the supervision of their assigned resident and attending physician. H&Ps are to be completed and progress notes are to be written daily under supervision of the resident; All necessary lab work may be drawn by the student (if able) under resident supervision.

3) Fourth year students are required to attend all resident conferences and should sign attendance sheets (see schedule of conferences). When appropriate, students are encouraged to present their patients in designated conferences with their assigned resident (e.g. evaluation conferences).

4) Research opportunities are available.

5) If a medical student is in any way dissatisfied with his/her rotation, he/she is encouraged to discuss problems with the resident assigned to him/her and/or the chief resident or the attending chief of service of the ward early in the rotation, so that problems may be rectified as quickly as possible. Serious problems during the rotation should be reported directly to Dr. Moroz.
