FAQs: Adult Therapeutic Recreation

Q. What is the purpose of therapeutic recreation for adults?
A. All of our programs are designed to help patients cope with changes in lifestyle and to increase independence to enhance their quality of life. We also provide an environment in which patients can socialize and create a supportive network with peers during and after hospitalization.

Each patient's treatment is designed to incorporate the individual's personal recreation/leisure interests with physical, emotional, social, and/or cognitive goals.

Patients are encouraged to examine their leisure lifestyle, participate in activities that will foster independence and, if necessary, learn new or adaptive skills that may be better suited to their current health needs.

Q. What types of programs and activities are offered for adults?
A. Adult therapeutic recreation programs include music therapy, art therapy, crafts, Internet and computer education, photography, jewelry workshop, animal-assisted activities, aromatherapy, relaxation techniques, a variety of games, "video vacations," musical performances, movies, and many social activities, including holiday parties.
