The Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine Announces Merger with NYUHJD Rehabilitation, New Inpatient Specialty Programs, and The New Rusk Rehabilitation Network

January 11, 2006

We would like to take this opportunity to tell you about some exciting changes that are taking place at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. In an effort to fulfill our mission of “Leading the Way in Rehabilitation Medicine, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” we are proud to announce that as of January 1 2006, two of the region’s leading centers of rehabilitation medicine, The Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Rehabilitation Program at The Hospital for Joint Diseases, will become one, as a major part of NYU Hospitals Center. This exciting step forward will allow the Rusk Institute (ranked #1 in NY State by U.S. News & World Report for 16 straight years) to expand the range of rehabilitation services available to the communities of greater New York.

The Rusk Institute now offers specialty rehabilitation programs in Stroke Rehabilitation, Medically Complex Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, Pediatric Rehabilitation, Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and General Rehabilitation at 34th Street; and Brain Injury Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Rehabilitation at its 17th Street location. This expanded Rusk Institute will provide one standard of care – the Rusk standard - at two locations.

To complement our acute inpatient rehabilitation services, the Rusk Institute has also implemented an expanded continuum of care and has partnered with six (6) of New York’s finest regional skilled nursing facilities as part of the new Rusk Rehabilitation Network. Now, patients requiring subacute rehabilitation can receive the same excellence in care that has long been associated with the Rusk Institute’s acute inpatient rehabilitation programs. In an effort to coordinate this continuum of care, we have assembled a dedicated team of experienced professionals, the Rusk Liaisons, who are trained to assess your patient’s rehabilitation needs on-site at your facility or by calling the Rusk Clinical Outreach office at 212.263.6034.

For your convenience, we have enclosed an informational brochure that outlines our eight (8) acute rehabilitation specialty programs, as well as the contact information for our Rusk Clinical Outreach office.

The Rusk Institute has always been a national and international leader and innovator in providing quality rehabilitation services. We are confident that these additions to the scope of Rusk’s clinical services are responsive to the needs of consumers. It will ensure that the well-known Rusk standard of care is available to more persons in need of rehabilitation services throughout a continuum that includes acute inpatient rehabilitation, sub-acute rehabilitation, and outpatient rehabilitation services.

We are hopeful that you will continue to utilize these Rusk programs and we stand ready to work with you to facilitate your patients’ access to the Rusk Rehabilitation Network.

Thank you very much.
Mathew Lee, Medical Director, Rusk Institute and Chairman/Professor Rehabilitation Medicine; and Carl Willemin, Vice President for Hospital Operations, NYU Hospitals Center.
