The Pigmented Lesion Clinic has as its principal goal, the detection of malignant melanoma in its early, curable, phase. The Clinic is held twice weekly in the Oncology Section of the Skin and Cancer Unit,
New York University Medical Center. Patients seen in the Clinic receive total cutaneous examinations on a periodic basis. Many patients are followed with the use of total-body photography. The latest technology including dermoscopy (skin surface microscopy) and digitized dermoscopic image analysis is under use and further development in the Clinic. Patients with a strong history of familial melanoma or multiple primary melanomas can volunteer for molecular genetic studies that are being conducted at NYU Medical Center.
The Pigmented Lesion Skin Tumor Conference is an interdisciplinary conference held from September through June including dermatologists, plastic surgeons, pathologists, etc. who come together to assist patients with diagnostic and therapeutic problems concerning problematic tumors of the skin. Other medical disciplines are invited to attend the Conferences where their special expertise may be needed. A summary of the deliberations of the members of the Conference is provided to the referring physician.
