Subject: New policy on acquistion of radioactive materials
Effective immediately, all radioactive materials used for research
are being delivered directly to the Radiation Safety Office (MSBG58,
opposite the Student Cafeteria). Packages will no longer be delivered
directly to labs or held in the Receiving Department. The Radiation
Safety Office will notify you when the package arrives and we will
ask you to arrange to pick it up. Radiation Safety will perform
the package wipe check, so your lab will no longer be required to
do this. This will help compensate you for the time taken to pick
up the package and it will ensure that this check is completed within
3 hours after receipt as required by regulations.
The intent of this new procedure is to ensure that the Radiation
Safety Office has knowledge of all incoming shipments; that they
are consistent with the conditions of the license and your permit,
that they are handled in a secure manner; and that they are checked
for contamination within the time-frame required by regulations.
This new procedure is similar to one used at other major institutions
in the City and beyond. It should result in faster receipt of urgent
items if you pick them up promptly.
Please contact the Radiation Safety Office if you are expecting
a radioactive package - you should not contact the Receiving Department.
This will expedite matters because the contact information available
on most packages is often incomplete.
This procedure is authorized under a new policy that is available
on the Radiation Safety website:
