Recent Changes at SPA

New Fringe Benefit Rate Proposal for Fiscal Year 2007

In accordance with federal guidelines, a new fringe benefit rate effective September 1, 2006 of 30.8% has been filed. All future grant application budgets with a start date on/after September 1, 2006 must be submitted using the newly proposed rate. Budget calculation forms are updated to reflect the new rate on the SPA website.

National Headache Foundation

The National Headache Foundation (NHF) supports research in the field of headache and pain as part of its mission to offer education and information to headache sufferers. The NHF is interested in research protocols that are objectively sound and whose results can, when published in medical literature, contribute to the better understanding and treatment of headache and pain. Grants may be used for data analysis, interpretation, reading of results, etc.

The projects will be evaluated by the Research Committee early in 2007 and grant recipients will be notified by March 1, 2007. If you would like a copy of the grant application and for further information, visit: http://www.headaches.org/.

Purdue University - Eli Lilly

Life Sciences and Business Plan Competition

Purdue University in collaboration with the Lilly Endowment is seeking entrants for the 2006 Life Sciences Business Plan Competition. Entries should describe the commercialization of a product or service for use in the sciences industry, such as medical devices, software, manufacturing, or
research services.

• June 26, 2006 - Registration and Executive Summaries Due
• July 10, 2006 - Semi-finalists Announced
• August 7 - Full Business Plan Due
• August 21, 2006 - Finalists Announced
• September 13, 2006 - Final Competition

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression

2007 Young Investigator Award Program

NARSAD is the largest non-government, donor-supported organization that distributes funds for brain disorder research. This program provides support for the most promising young scientists conducting neurobiological research.

One and two year awards up to $30,000 per year are provided to either extend research fellowship training or begin careers as independent research faculty. Applications must be submitted electronically through the NARSAD website www.narsad.org/research/apply on or before July 25, 2006.

The Medical Foundation

The Patterson Trust Fellowship Program in Brain Circuitry

Bank of America is pleased to announce the creation of the Robert Leet and Clara Guthrie Patterson Trust Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Brain Circuitry. Research conducted by Patterson Trust Fellows will seek fundamental insights into the mechanisms by which neural circuits control behavior. Awards will be made to investigators working in non-profit research institutions in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

• Ten two-year awards will be made with at least two designated for each of the three eligible states.
• Two-year stipends ranging from $44,500 – $54,000 per year

Application deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2006 for awards beginning on January 15, 2007.

Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS)

The Career Awards for Medical Scientists (CAMS) is the result of the reformulation of the Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences (CABS) program. In response to the NIH's K99/R00 Pathway to Independence awards, the BWF has shifted focus to address the on-going problem of increasing the number of physician scientists and keeping them in research.

CAMS program provides $700,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. The deadline for receipt of all application materials is: October 2, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. EST.

The mission of the PhRMA Foundation is to support young scientists in disciplines important to the pharmaceutical industry by awarding them competitive research fellowships and grants at a critical decision point at the outset of their careers.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics

A non-profit affiliate of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announces a new award program to support application of emerging technologies toward restoring function to the genetically defective protein responsible for cystic fibrosis. Awards are available for $1,000,000 annually for up to three years for established investigators within academic institutions or biopharmaceutical companies.
