American Federation for Aging Research

AFAR Research Grants

  • AFAR provides up to $60,000 for a one- to two-year award to junior faculty (M.D.'s and Ph.D.'s) to do research that will serve as the basis for longer term research efforts.
  • AFAR-supported investigators study a broad range of biomedical and clinical topics including the causes of cellular senescence, the role of estrogen in the development of osteoporosis, the genetic factors associated with Alzheimer's disease, the effects of nutrition and exercise on the aging process, and much more.
  • Deadline for receipt of application is December 15, 2005.

Paul Beeson Career Development Awards in Aging Research Program

  • The National Institute on Aging (NIA), The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, The John A. Hartford Foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies (USA), the Starr Foundation, and an anonymous donor are collaborating on this initiative to sustain and promote the research careers of clinically trained individuals who are pursuing research careers in aging.
  • Deadline for letter of intent is October 24, 2005 (not required)
  • Application receipt date is November 23, 2005.

The Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research

  • Sponsored by the Ellison Medical Foundation, this program encourages outstanding mid-career scientists who have not been engaged in aging research but whose research is relevant and could lead to novel approaches to aging.
  • Also eligible are aging researchers whose research is high risk, and thus not attractive to NIH or other traditional sources, but has the potential for high payoff in advancing our understanding of basic aging.
  • Up to four four-year awards of $550,000 will be awarded. o Deadline for receipt of application is December 15, 2005.

Glenn/AFAR Breakthroughs in Gerontology Awards

  • The goal of the Glenn/AFAR BIG program is to provide timely support to a small number of pilot research programs that may be of relatively high risk but which offer significant promise of yielding transforming discoveries in the fundamental biology of aging.
  • Full-time faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher who can demonstrate a strong record of independence are eligible.
  • Up to four grants of up to $125,000 each will be awarded.
  • Deadline for receipt of application is May 2, 2005.

The Cart Fund, Inc.

  • To encourage exploratory and developmental AD research projects by providing support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data, but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research.
  • One award of up to $250,000 will be awarded in 2006.
  • Deadline for receipt of Letter of Intent is December 15, 2005.

Ellison Medical Foundation/AFAR Senior Postdoctoral Fellows Research Program

  • The program encourages and furthers the careers of postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) in the fundamental mechanisms of aging.
  • Fellows with at least three and not more than five years of prior postdoctoral training are eligible.
  • Up to three two-year fellowships of $100,000 will be awarded in 2006.
  • Deadline for receipt of application is December 15, 2005.

Medical Student Summer Research Training in Aging Program

  • To encourage medical students - particularly budding researchers - to consider a career in academic geriatrics, this program awards short-term scholarships.
  • AFAR has partnered with the NIA and several foundations to continue and strengthen the original Hartford/AFAR Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program.

RFP: Understanding, Mitigating, and Preventing HIV Transmission and Infection Research Grants

  • amfAR is pleased to announce the availability of targeted support for research projects in biomedical science relevant to understanding, mitigating and preventing HIV transmission and infection.
  • Satisfy various financial obligations incurred in the course of an HIV/AIDS-related investigation.
  • Period of Performance: 12 months starting January 1, 2006.
  • A research grant is applied to direct costs of salaries for professional and technical personnel, laboratory supplies and equipment, travel, and the publication of findings.
  • The amount to be granted under this funding initiative is a maximum of $75,000 in direct costs.
  • Indirect costs may not exceed 20% of direct costs.
  • Maximum total award is $90,000.

    Fellowships

  • Fellowships are grants that encourage the postdoctoral investigator with limited experience in the field of HIV/AIDS to further advance a career in HIV/AIDS research.
  • The applicant’s interest in a career in HIV/AIDS will be demonstrated by previous relevant work at the post-doctoral-fellow or instructor level and will be carefully evaluated.
  • An amfAR Fellow must be sponsored by an experienced investigator who: (a) is qualified to oversee the proposed research; (b) has successfully supervised postdoctoral fellows; and (c) is typically at the associate professor level or higher.
  • Period of Performance: 24 months starting January 1, 2006.
  • An amfAR fellowship is applied to direct costs of the fellow’s supplies and salary.
  • The amount to be granted under this funding initiative is a maximum of $35,000 for salary/fringe benefits for each of two years and $20,000 for supplies for two years for a direct cost total of $90,000.
  • Indirect costs may not exceed 10% of direct costs.
  • Maximum total award is $99,000.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Health Policy Fellowships Program

  • This program is designed to develop the capacity of outstanding midcareer health professionals in academic and community-based settings to assume leadership roles in health policy and management, to gain an understanding of the health policy process, and to contribute to the formulation of new policies and programs.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to be eligible for this program.
  • It is not possible to apply online for a grant under this program. To apply, please follow the program-specific instructions in the Call for Applications.
  • Total support for the three years may not exceed $155,000.
  • Application Deadline: November 18, 2005

Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research

The Kimmel Scholar Award

  • The Kimmel Foundation is seeking accomplished young investigators dedicated to a career in cancer research.
  • Applications are limited to those who achieved the equivalent rank of Assistant Professor on or after July, 2002. Physicians who have both clinical and research responsibility are eligible if appointed on or after July, 2001.
  • These awards are designed for researchers who do not yet have their own R01 funding.
  • Applicants will be judged on the basis of quality of prior work, research proposed and letters of support.
  • Funding of awards will be subject to execution of binding agreements setting forth terms and conditions under which scholarships will be provided.
  • Deadline for submitting applications for the 2006 awards is Tuesday, December 6, 2005.
  • Applicants for 2006 awards will be notified by mid-April, 2006.
  • Please continue to check the website for information on a web-based application option.
  • To select the grant recipients, the Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research has created a Medical Advisory Board consisting of distinguished cancer researchers.
  • Each year the Kimmel Foundation expects to select up to ten grant recipients who will receive $100,000 per year for two years.
  • The Foundation requests that institutions limit overhead to 15% or less.
  • Qualified applicants must hold an M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree and must perform research in an American not-for-profit institution during the period of Kimmel Foundation support.
  • Applicants for 2006 awards will be notified by mid-April, 2006.

The Kimmel Translational Science Award

  • The Foundation provides five additional awards specifically for physicians engaged in translational science.
  • Eligibility includes those with M.D. or equivalent degrees, who have achieved the rank of Assistant Professor on or after July, 2001.
  • Candidates must not hold R01 funding for the laboratory component of their cancer research.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a significant personal involvement in the laboratory component of the translational project described.
  • The translational research may involve primarily animal studies but must include reasonable application to subsequent human investigation.
