About Us

Founded in 1882 as the Tumor Service of the Department of Surgery of the Skin and Cancer Hospital, we are the oldest clinical cancer service in continuous existence in the United States. The Skin and Cancer Hospital became part of the Post-Graduate Hospital in 1934, which then became a component of the NYU School of Medicine in 1948. The Post-Graduate Hospital subsequently became the University Hospital of the new NYU Medical Center in 1963, and is now known as Tisch Hospital, the University Hospital of the New York University Medical Center.

Since the beginning, our mission has been to advance clinical cancer care, research, and teaching within the environment of a comprehensive cancer center. As such, we are an essential component of one of the nation’s most outstanding university medical centers.
