The Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at the New York University Medical Center is directed by Dr. Joseph G. McCarthy with a faculty of nineteen plastic surgeons and associated specialists in orthodontics, prosthodontics, and psychology of the NYU Medical Center. The three-year program is fully accredited for nine residents (three in each year).
Comprehensive training is assured by rotations through five hospitals: Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, the Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital and the Burn Unit at New York Hospital.
Residents obtain exposure to all aspects of plastic surgery including: craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, head and neck reconstructive surgery, breast reconstructive surgery, facial trauma, reconstruction of burn deformities, ophthalmic plastic surgery and aesthetic surgery. The resident performs approximately six-to-seven hundred surgical procedures in each year of training. The program is accredited to begin as a three-year program beginning in 2000, however, the 3-3-3 rotations will not begin until July 1, 2002. This means that anyone who matches into the program as of 2000, will train for three years.
Requirements
There are two possible pathways of training: the "Traditional Program" via the Plastic Surgery Match and the recently developed "Coordinated Program" via the NRMP Match. For the Traditional Program, candidates must satisfy the basic requirements of the American Board of Plastic Surgery which includes three years of training in an approved general surgery program or board eligibility in a surgical specialty which is recognized by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Currently, preference is given to candidates who will be board eligible in general surgery (or one of the surgical specialties) when they enter the Institute program
The Coordinated Program consists of three years of general surgery and three years of plastic surgery at NYU. Applications to the coordinated program are made in the fourth year of medical school and residency positions are offered through the NRMP Match.

The Program
The Residency Training Program at the Institute is designed to provide each resident with progressive responsibility and the fullest possible experience in all areas of plastic surgery. Currently, during the first year, the resident rotates for periods of three months each on the Plastic Surgery Service at Tisch Hospital, the Plastic Surgery Service at Bellevue Hospital, the Hand Service at Bellevue Hospital and for two months on the Hand Service at Tisch Hospital with one month at the New York Hospital/Cornell Burn Unit. The Bellevue Hand Service rotation includes being the resident at the VA Hospital. During the second year, the resident rotates for periods of three months each as Chief Residents at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, Chief Resident on the Plastic Surgery Service at Tisch Hospital, Chief Resident of the Plastic Surgery Service at Bellevue Hospital and Chief Resident on the Hand Service at Bellevue Hospital. The combined Plastic Surgery Service at the four hospitals uses an average of nine-to-ten operating rooms each day, occupying approximately 85-100 beds at any one time. At Tisch Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital there is a combination of private and clinic surgery. At Bellevue Hospital Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital all surgery is performed by the residents.
The Institute is a division of the Department of Surgery at New York University Medical Center and a close relationship is maintained with the general surgery attendings and residents.
In addition to bedside, operating room and clinic teaching, educational activities include: formal conferences, weekly resident lectures, visiting professor and guest lectures, and attendance at the special courses and symposia organized by the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.
Senior residents are encouraged to present papers at various residents' and national meetings on approval of the Director. Junior residents are currently sent at the Institute's expense to the American Association of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting. Fully equipped laboratories are available for research in microsurgery, wound healing, craniofacial growth and development, computer imaging, cutaneous blood flow and immunology. All trainees are required to participate in these programs.
The Institute's John Marquis Converse Library contains 30,000 reprints of plastic surgery articles and upwards of 1,500 volumes of plastic surgery literature. A VCR and a library of tapes from the collection of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation are also available. The New York University Medical Center Library with more than 118,000 volumes and 1,400 current periodicals is available to the resident staff, as are the smaller libraries at both Bellevue and the Veterans Administration Hospital. The New York Academy of Medicine Library is another resource within the area.
Housing
Subsidized housing is available to the plastic surgery residents by lottery in the new Skirball building and the Kip's Bay building across the street from Tisch Hospital on First Avenue, but most residents live in apartments in the neighborhood.
