Microsurgery

The Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery has played a major role in the development and refinement of microsurgical techniques to the ultimate benefit of patients worldwide. Dr. William Shaw (former Chief of Plastic Surgery at UCLA School of Medicine) and Dr. Daniel Baker created the Bellevue Replantation Service which helped define the methods, indications and pitfalls in limb and digit salvage surgery. Dr. John Siebert has pioneered the use of microvascular free tissue transfer to reconstruct congenital or acquired facial asymmetrics and deformities. Drs. Nolan Karp and Armen Kasabian have helped to elucidate the optimal approach to treatment of limb threatening wounds and ulcers in diabetic and post-traumatic patients. Dr. David Chiu has developed an international reputation in peripheral nerve surgery.

Recent recruits have only strengthened the clinical expertise of the NYU Microsurgery Division. Dr. Christine Ahn, an internationally renowned breast reconstructive surgeon was successfully recruited from UCLA and has exposed the NYU faculty to "state of the art" microvascular breast reconstruction. Dr. Mark Delacure, previously Chief of Head and Neck Oncology at Roswell Park Center has joined the faculty to add further experience in the field of head and neck oncology and reconstruction. Dr. Robert Allen, a pioneer of perforator flap techniques and breast reconstruction, has also recently joined the faculty.
